weeds and flowers & succulents ...from my garden

above is from a grass...green stems with this brown/gold color seed pods at the tip of stems....background is the black, cotton dhotis, male devotees of Aiyappa use!

Above and below...either onion or garlic flowers...not sure which..grown in front of my home

Rose in front of my home...late bloom

It was a delightful surprise to discover that a squash plant has grown ... roots under the cement slabs of the back yard deck! I suspected it was a squash plant when I first saw the leaves... confirmed when I saw the flowers. I suppose a seed fell between the slabs and we have this creeper now. Hope we get at least one squash...and it survives the squirrels.

NEVER ever gift a pet to practicing Jains !

Most people are aware of Buddhism but few outside India are aware of Jainism and Jains. Devout and practicing Jains  lead a way of life similar to practicing Buddhists.  The founder of Jainism, Mahavira, preached and practiced principles similar to that preached by the Buddha.

My friend's family are practicing Jains, ergo they don't eat meat, dont kill insects, practice non-violence to 'extreme' levels...I am labelling their behaviours as ''extreme'' but they see themselves as normal and merely following their religion's tenets.

To cut a long story short, someone gifted this family with a pup. They looked after this pup with love and affection. However, their religion, forbids them from disciplining and this has sort of let matters get out of control. The matriarch of the family will not let the others scold the pup and this has lead to severe problems.

The most terrifying aspect of this dog is the ticks it's got from somewhere. The family does NOT kill the ticks as it's against their religion. The ticks are pulled out and taken outside the house and dropped off! There are ticks all over the house and they have started biting the family too. In fact, one of the family members had a tick inside  her ear and after suffering from agonizing itching and pain, went to a doctor who removed the tick and informed her that there are eggs inside her ear and he needs to do something about it!

The family knows what needs to be done but absolutely refuse to get the medicine to free the dogs of it's ticks. I admire their staunch adherence to their principle of non-violence, despite their own suffering but I could never be this non-violent! For me, to slap a mosquito biting my arm is an automatic and unconscious act! To chase a cockroach and stomp it to death, gives me a sense of accomplishment. To 'frown and talk sternly' to my  cat when it's bugging me is routine. To yell at my husband when he bugs me is something which happens so often. I think, I commit at least one violent act every hour and maybe many in a hour sometimes!

I think living a life like a practicing Jain would be aspirational for me...NOT practical. But imagine if all of us, aspired to live like this? Wha would happen? The fishing industry, poultry industry, meat industry, ammunition factories, would shut down...the industries depending on animals would be in chaos, at least those industries which depend on 'killing' animals rather than waiting for dead animals.  The economy as it stands today, would be in chaos...at least for a while.
Maybe, someone should make a movie with this theme and picturize how the world would be if it were to turn non-violent. It would be totally topsy-turvy!

I loved this piece of perfection...Why dont we have such craftsmanship in India now? We had it before..evidenced by the amazing temples and palaces and art work from ancient times.

My Nirvana moment-

I have experiences with  two sets of people (1) my clients who seek psychotherapy and (2)people in my life such as  family, friends, colleagues, neighbors, relatives, random strangers.

Over years of people-interaction,  formal study of psychology and work in mental health, I have come up with these mantras for peace of mind.

Accept yourself. Love yourself. Be comfortable with yourself, no matter what. This means:
it does not matter to you whether you are fat, thin, tall, short, blonde or African, educated or illiterate, a sweeper or a CEO. You accept yourself and love yourself.

I don't mean to say you accept yourself and be passive. You accept yourself and like yourself while simultaneously striving to learn more, keep trying to achieve what you want.

When I say accept yourself, I mean you accept yourself without beating yourself too much about what you perceive as  faults. I mean accepting yourself without embarrassment. Without trying to impress others. Should you buy a suit you cant afford to   impression others with your 'style' or 'success' ? NO.

Accept yourself also means
You don't feel the emotion, 'pride' when you think of yourself.
You don't 'suffer' the emotion of  'shame' when you think of yourself.
You are calm, you are neutral, you experience no intense emotion, when you think of yourself.
This kind of acceptance of self is difficult to achieve but I believe one should strive to achieve this for mental health.
(The Buddha said this two thousand years ago!)

Accept yourself without comparing yourself to others.
Comparing ourselves to others by either 'keeping up with the Jones'  or looking down on the "ne'er-do-wells" is something many of us do, often, consciously or unconsciously. Some people   start the 'judging mechanism' as soon as they meet someone! Their brain, automatically, compares the person to self  and the outcome is  either pride or envy. This means the comparison leads to unhappiness or happiness based not on what one achieved but simply by comparing and coming out on top.
Emotions swing like a crazed Yo-yo, if our happiness is dependent on 'us coming off on top when we compare ourselves with others' or our unhappiness comes from 'us not comparing well with others'. For example, You feel good because you are in a better job than your neighbour; you feel miserable because your classmate got better marks than you.
If you look at the above examples, you see that your emotions have NOTHING to do with your achievement or non-achievement. They are dependent on your neighbour's non-achievement or your class-mate's achievement, both of which you have no control over. If your emotions are affected by factors over which you have no control, imagine how helpless you are ? You are like a straw floating on a stormy river, being thrown this way and that, depending on the currents, not on yourself.

Why did I write this?
Someone I know spilt coffee on his jeans at work and wanted to drive back home to change. I disagree with this waste of time and gas(gas is a finite resource) completely! I would have either rinsed off the stain in the bathroom with a wet paper or if I had privacy, taken my jeans off and washed just the stained patch and worn it. It would dry with body heat in an hour when I continue working.
It struck me that in today's world, there seems to be such a neurotic need to 'look good' when at work and it's as if one cant sit at work for a day, if one has a coffee stain on the pants. A coffee stain is NOT a big deal to me but it seems to be a big deal to today's generation.

Similarly, I know of a lady who wants to meet me but does not want to invite me home as she does not feel comfortable showing her home to me! My advise to her, "Don't be shy about your apartment; Accept it. I am not going to judge. If your guests judge your apartment, shame on them, not you".

People should stop apologizing and start accepting themselves. I don't mean that a liar, a thief and a murderer should start accepting themselves and stop apologizing of course. Be ethical. Be moral. As long as  you are ethical and moral, DO NOT, apologize about anything else. Accept yourself and love yourself. Don't be embarrassed. Don't be ashamed. Don't hide your true self.

Comparing  yourself to others is a MEANINGLESS EXERCISE.  Everyone is different. So it makes no sense to compare. What is the point in comparing apples to oranges?
We are different because each of us are unique;
EACH OF US are what they are because we have been forged by experiences, education, genetics, families, societies and cultures UNIQUE  TO EACH OF US. Even siblings growing up in the same family, exposed to the same experiences, end up with different personalities and go on different trajectories in life.  This is because, even in that micro-society called family, they had differing experiences which forged them differently.

Peace of mind comes from accepting yourself and your lot.
While some of us, face failure(and so unhappiness) because of we not 'hustling enough', many of us, face failure, because of factors not in our control. A big example(my friends and family) for this is the inability of brilliant Indian and Chinese scientists not able to get jobs in the USA, not because they did not work hard enough but due to factors beyond their control. While a few accept this with remarkable stoicism, many feel disheartened and their self-esteem seems to take a massive blow. This should not be!
They would have had peace of mind and their calm would remain unshaken if their sense of self-worth was not linked to their jobs.

what reasons for my unhappiness?

A few days ago, I wrote about what makes me happy and then I thought, I should analyze the causes of my unhappiness too. I suppose, learning the causes of my unhappiness would be the first step toward helping myself.

I think the biggest source of unhappiness for me is the struggles and problems faced by my loved ones i.e.my family, friends and sometimes, people I haven't met but know of from the news.

The lack of things in my life does not make me unhappy or at least not much. This may be because (a)I have all I want or (b)my needs are within my means or(c) I am a pretty unambitious and content person.

I also think that I experience many negative emotions which are strictly speaking, not Unhappiness per-se. The negative emotions I experience very often and a lot more often than unhappiness are:
anxiety
anger
jealousy
worry
Revengefulness
Egoism:
sense of inferiority
shame

When do I experience these emotions? What are the triggers? What will help me get over these emotions? I suppose if I could figure out how to get over these emotions, I would be happy. But figuring out is the problem!

Anxiety & worry: I was learning car driving recently (for the fourth time and gave up again!) and I was quite anxious behind the wheel. The teacher yelling at me dint help either! My anxiety is manifested by my brain freezing over and me being unable to understand and do what he wants me to do. I was so slow in my responses; he would yell more or was more sarcastic and I would freeze even more!
I think I am anxious  when called to meet an authority figure, especially when I believe I have erred in some way and am in trouble. I cannot believe I experience the same type of anxiety I experienced in school 4 decades ago! I also feel anxious when I am going to be late.
In some situations, I get angry and yell and scream at times and I strongly believe that I am angry and not anxious; however my sister argues  that I am experiencing anxiety and so I am yelling; I am not sure if this is unrecognized anxiety or is it really anger and nothing to do with anxiety.
I know I am anxious when my husband is angry; sometimes I am merely angry but at times I am anxious too. I am often anxious about my relatives in India. I worry about my nieces and nephews, my parents and sisters.  I worry about their not doing well in studies; I worry about my folks spending money unwisely; about their health; about the way my siblings are bringing up their kids. I worry about so many things... none of which are my business! I am not worried about my husband or his job, money, health, future or my job. So, five-six major sources of worry are eliminated. But I still spend so much time worrying!

Jealousy: I sometimes feel jealous. I don't think I feel jealous of people I like or strangers. But I do feel jealous of people I dislike. I know this is a disgusting emotion but this emotion seems so biological and out of my control!
  •  I am admitting I experience jealousy sometimes. That is the first step.
  • I know it is disgusting and I have to stop feeling jealous. That is the second step.
  • Now the third step is overcoming it. I have to work on this. I am doing it. At times I succeed.  That is I am able to distract myself and replace my jealous thoughts by  engaging my mind with other thoughts and activities;  or I count my blessings and tell myself I am doing better than the person I am jealous of in other ways.
Anger: This is one emotion I experience most frequently. Anger seems to be at the tip of my whatever all the time and I can go from calm to boiling in seconds! I have been told by others about this problem; I have got into trouble often due to this temper;

Elora and Fergus, visit on July 21, 2018

Wanted to go out 'somewhere'...if only to avoid the pending household chores of cleaning, laundry and cooking! Checked on Google and discovered two places, within driving distance from home, as yet unexplored! Elora and Fergus, two villages one hour 40 minutes drive away.
Packed idli, chutney, chicken saru, yelner, water, cherries and banana and off we went.

Here are a few photos.

Above is a lovely field on the way to Elora.
Went to Elora gorge first. The river flows through limestone gorge. There were caves in the walls of the gorge!

Above and below are photos of the river flowing with the limestone cliffs on either side

Above is a bridge at end over the flowing river
above is a part of the limestone cliff.  he flowing river has literally gored through the limestone with millions of years flowing I think. The width of the space where the river flows clearly shows how much rock has been gorged away over the years!
above and below ..a a pattern on the lime stone rock...green alge inbetween the lines.

above is a cave in the cliffside

below is another cave in the cliff. the green is the alge i think

above and below are patterns on the rock...I wonder what caused the swirly lines?

above and below are caves. I wish I had seen some creatures there !

I love the tenacity of this tree's will to live and grow!

 Roots more stubborn than humans!
Below is a place where people get married I think. To the left, the river flows and not in this photo. This is in the town of Elora.

I love this lovely green against the rock!

above and below is one of the many houses built using the local limestone .

Below are photos from the lovely Elora quarry. It's huge. Costs ten dollara per person to gain entry. One can swim, laze around in the waters. Some were diving off the cliff! families were picnicking, etc.

Below are trees on way to the quarry from the parking lot.
