Went to Ontario's wood carving show at Pickering as my husband's latest of his ever changing hobbies is wood carving. Had a great day there...He who is usually impatient, spent several minutes with each wood carver and discussed with them. All in all, we had a great day.
It was a cold but sunny day at Pickering. There was a very affordable 3.00$ entry fee, free parking and the place was neither crowded nor too thin. I was initially a bit startled to see that we seemed to be the only colored folks there! Both the carvers and the visitors seemed to belong to the over-middle age group, were white and dressed like non-Toronto folks. There were quite a number of women carvers too and these also seemed to be white and over middle age. Many carvers I spoke to said they took up wood carving after retiring as a hobby. I did see a single carver of possible south-east asian background.
The visitors and the carvers were very friendly, talkative and were not hustling to see their wares, which was a relief and a blessing. I loved the carvings and many of the carvers were working at their tables as we walked by. They explained and demonstrated and were encouraging if one expressed interest in taking up wood carving. None refused when I asked to photograph their creations.
My husband bought about 100.00$ worth of tools to add to his collection.
We went to an Indian restaurant Zeera by the Bay for lunch. The food was delicious! We had biryani, naan, Saag Paneer and Dhal makhni. We returned to the wood carving show and attended the Totem pole carving class which was for about 30 minutes. I expected he would show how to carve. He told us stories about each of the three Totem poles he had carved, briefly explained the 4 day process of carving the Totem poles. It was an interesting experience. We came by 11am and left at three pm.
A nice way to spend a fall day!
Below are many photos of several of the works on display. The wood carvers who did these amazing pieces were also present at the show but their names or photos or not here.

This wooden helmet with a bullet hole is my absolute favorite! I had to knock on it to make sure it was wood and not metal!
